Last Day in Kennebunk

Our return trip starts tomorrow. Today we got off to a slow start. In fact, every day we've been here we got off to a slow start because this is a vacation.

And on a vacation you sometimes treat yourself, right? So we went to a Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream shop for some of their offerings. We found these signs on the door ...

It reads like a Quebec sign telling you when you can turn right on red. So much for that idea. But treats were also being sold at a quaint store around the corner, so we walked over there. We found this sign in the window ...

You guessed it. The place was closed. So we settled for a Tic Tac from Carol's supply and began our exploration of Ocean Avenue. A very beautiful area.

Did I already mention I like New England houses? Here's another example of what I mean ...

Among the houses along this stretch of coastline is one belonging to the Bush family, of US Presidential notability. A modest parking spot is provided at a distance so one can stop and gaze in wonderment at it. We stopped and took a photo of the house and of porpoises playing in the ocean.

First: the house ...

Next: The porpoises playing nearby ...

Yes, not much of a picture. You try it some day. If you feel for a better picture of porpoises, here's a link ...   https://www.pxfuel.com/en/desktop-wallpaper-flcgm

During this stop we had an interesting chat with a local woman whose family got to be acquainted with President George H. W. Bush. She told us he once tapped her on the behind with his tennis racket.

Getting back to photos, here's a couple more from today ... me on the beach and Carol on the bench.

Toward the end of the afternoon I noticed a store called 'The Knotty Elephant. Its logo is an elephant with its trunk in a knot. The front window indicated this store was all things elephant, toys, books, sweatshirts and T-shirts with elephant pictures, lamps with elephants in relief, etc. Could this be the place to find an elephant figurine? He only had one, its was large and heavy, and the trunk was raised,
not relaxed. So the quest continues.

Why a store about elephants, you ask? The owner was present and he gave me the whole history. It's a long one based on a true story about three performing elephants of over a hundred years ago. If you'd like to visit this shop online, here's the link ...

And that's it for today.
