A Quiet Thursday

After a leisurely morning in our rented apartment we drove off to explore. Ogunquit and Wells Beach are not far away so we trailed along Route 1 that takes us through the local main streets. At one point I decided to switch on our GPS and pulled into a parking lot to do so. As serendipity would have it, we had stopped at a used book store.

This one had books galore and  I could have browsed for hours. But it was a warm and sunny day, unmistakably created for being outside. If sometime we have a rainy day I'll go back.

I spoke with an older gentleman manning the bookstore cash register. He was the owner and a Canadian, born in New Brunswick. Years ago he bought a few tons of books at an auction thinking he'd prosper in the bookstore business. He had way too many books for his building. He bought another one, further along the road, and opened a second bookstore there. These two properties are now worth a lot of money. He said, "I've prospered far more in the real estate business than the book business."

Our explorations brought us eventually to Wells Beach where we found a broad space relax, and sun ourselves a little. The tide was coming ing in. The width of the beach gradually grew narrower. People started leaving and one couple warned us not to let the incoming tide trap us.

It kind of trapped us. We got onto the beach by going down stairs, and the path back to those stairs got flooded. Here's a photo ...

In the distance is clear, dry beach where we were. We had to pass rocks on the way there, and back. I took this photo from the top of the stairs wearing thoroughly wet canvas shoes.

Still, it was refreshing to be on a beach, on a warm, sunny day. Although I think this dog had a more exciting time with a rock he turned into a toy.

On our way back we stopped in Kennebunkport to poke around the country main street that must be teeming with tourists when it's in season. I believe "in season" starts next month. We are here at the right time.
